MLK Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. is perhaps one of the most famous civil rights activist and orators throughout history, with several of the most remembered speeches and writings, from his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” to his “I Have a Dream Speech.” I always found him to be a inspiring figure who stood up for what he believes in, and unwilling to compromise his values to reach his goal. For his famous peaceful protests, supporting only those events that insured him they would be non-violent, just illustrate how he stuck to his morals despite going up against people who had no qualms about using violence to continue the suppression of blacks. For Martin Luther King Jr. understood what having a strong character meant and demonstrated it throughout his life up to his untimely death when he was assassinated on the hotel balcony. While his actions certainly were instrumental to getting the civil rights act passed in 1968, I personally am not sure on whether his dream has truly been fulfilled. For while we have improved standing for the African Americans, and other minorities, integrating them; there still remains an above acceptable level of racism throughout the country.
